This is a wonderful show. It's got good writing, appealing and interesting characters, moral grounding without preachyness.
I'm still trying to decide what it is saying about faith and God and what I think about what it's saying, but it's appealing and intelligent enough to make me think about it.
Amber Tamblyn is excellent at producing thst complex combination of sturbborn but trying to please, cynical but naive, not so bright but actually pretty clever that characterises teenage girls (at least in fiction--I haven't known any teenage girls for about 25 years, and I didn't understand them then...); I find her wonderfully convincing as Joan.
Joe Mantegna is another wonderful character actor. He does a good job with what is, basically, the ideal dad. I'm always willing to watch something that has him in it.
Mary Steenburgen, while not quite what I would call beautiful, is lovely in a charming, slightly nervy, 'fussy, but in that way that mothers are that you can't really hate them for' way.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier, by contrast, is one beautiful woman: smart, sexy, and terrifically appealing. Yes, she only has a supporting role, but I, erm, tend to notice any time she shows up in a show. I think the forst place I saw her was in a show she and Kadeem Hardison had called "Abby" that was fun but not memorable...except for her presence! She's also been in Veronica Mars.
