One of the several trailers I saw before Casino Royale was one for Mel Gibson's new movie, 'Apocalypto'. Now, I am truly torn; this looks like a fascinating film--an adventure story, yes, and probably with the same failings that most 'historical' movies have--but still, when was the last time that someone made a film about one of the pre-Columbian Central American civilisations? There aren't even that many English-language novels that I'm familiar that are set in either the Mayan or Aztec cultures, and if you cut out ones that feature the Spanish conquest, even fewer.

If this is really badly done (like Braveheart or The Patriot), it would be a shame. And I hate to gove any money to a project undertaken by Mr Gibson.

But it looks like a *really* good movie...

Well, that was a nice way to get out of the house!

I had a walk 'round the neighborhood last night, but that hardly felt like a good days' exercise. So this afternoon I went off to do another segment of the W&OD Trail. Did around four and a half miles from Sterling to Ashburn; still quite a lot more to do, both westward and east of East Falls Church, but as long as I keep doing ~5 miles every weekend I will finish it before the end of the year. If I can enlist a chase crew, that much the better; I can do straight shots.

I did some dishes this morning (it's astonishing how many dishes a big meal makes, even if it's just a big meal for one person--luckily my days in the bakery trained me to clean up some things as I go along) and had a good breakfast. Now I've showered, petted cats, played a little solitaire. Time to do some more work preparing for the game Sunday.
