Serenity: no spoilers
Oct. 1st, 2005 08:55 amAnd, given that I've promised no spoilers, I can't say much. :-) Except GO SEE THIS! It is excellent. Action, wit, the Firefly characters (and actors) we know and love plus the disturbing and very handsome Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things, The Trust) and a cameo (/supporting) role for the raffish David Krumholtz. Joss Wheedon was smart enough to know that this couldn't just be a "long episode"; this is a saga, an epic (OK, a short epic) that actually explores and explains some of the facets of the Firefly universe. Enough, stop reading--go see it!
I met (literally)
principia_coh,
thepouncer,
daehith, LJ-less Brian, and
byronczimmer after slogging through incredibly bad traffic and negotiating the maze that is the new wing of Tysons. Very posh and impressive, but the layout can be a bit confusing. We ate in the food court near the movie theatres, which had a large selection of options, including an Italian/pizza bar where all the staff started shouting excitedly every few minutes. I wasn't ever able to ascertain *why*.
The theatre was quite plush, comfy seats, steep risers and not a broad fan, so I think everyone gets a pretty good view. We saw previews for something disturbing with Ewan McGregor, some very missable horror movie, Jarhead (a film about a Marine in the First Gulf War that looked interesting), the next Harry Potter (can't wait!), and the first Narnia movie (CAN'T WAIT!). The last looks truly excellent, despite a few little changes I gather (from their website) they've made. I don't think the changes are anything except cosmetic, and the actors and cinematography look marvelous (there's a trailer here). I think there may have been another preview--oh, yes, it was for this. Looks to fall into the "so bad it's good" category.
