truly wonderful artist
Sep. 17th, 2005 09:02 amWhile I was in Glasgow, I discovered the artist Avril Paton. I*love* her work, especially the urban landscapes that capture so beautifully the feeling of walking past and gazing in lighted windows at night, catching little vicarious glimpses of people's lives. My acquaintance witht he city is obviously *very* limited, but it seems to me that she captures something essential about the nature and character of Glasgow. Maybe it's just that, if there's anything about the city that I've already fallen in love with, it's the townhouses of the West End, where Ms. Paton works and which are the subject of much of her work.
It seems that she's at the opposite end of popularity from my other favourite modern Scottish artist, Jack Vettriano; prints of her work were at first available through a website run as a West End neighborhood project, and are now only available through a website that doesn't take credit cards (!)
Anyway, take a look and see if you agree with me about her work; I think she's wonderful!
