At 11.35 pm, Monday night, our second bag was finally delivered. We last saw it at 5 pm on Thursday afternoon.

Amazing.

I have NEVER had my luggage lost for more than 24 hours and they delivered it to my home (actually, it was lost for 12 hours, but I got it the next day). It was on my way home from Ireland, so it didn't make a difference as it was filled with dirty laundry! LOL! Your situation? Absurd!!!!!!!There is no way that the lost luggage should have taken that long to arrive, even if it DID get to the destination without you.

What I love most is that it didn't even leave for our destination until after our flight had been cancelled, we had requested our bags back, we had waited four hours to get the bags back, and had left the airport because we were told that the baggage handlers had all gone home.

But yes, I have NEVER had to wait more than a day to get bags back. Even the time I stayed in a short-let flat in Edinburgh and the owner turned the speaker for the front-door buzzer off as he left without telling me, I think the airline tried to deliver the bags 4-5 times before I found out that they were ringing the bell and I couldn't hear them, but still they got them to me within a day, I think.

I feel especially bad about this because it was my idea to check bags. E had fully expected to carry hers onto the plane, but I had packed things like a Leatherman tool, sunscreen, bugspray, and the most dangerous substance of all, toothpaste (from Boots, no less...) in my duffel bag, so I was pretty sure I couldn't take it through security. So the person who didn't need to check her bag at all was teh one who had to wait longest to get it back!

I was just going to say that you're going to get postcards of the bag in various locations. And while that is annoying, the prospect is tickling too. ;-)

I've been hoping to see tags or stickers for exotic locations (or even far-distant boring locations, like Schenectady) that would explain the bags' long vacation.

But no, the simple story seems to be that United Airlines is so brain-numbingly incompetent that they can't get bags that went to one location on Friday back to their starting point on any of the 2-3 other flights that day, or the 3-4 flights on Saturday, or the flights on Sunday. Not until the end of the third day after the bags left are they able to get them back to the beginning and returned.

The people I feel REALLY sorry for are the dogs we saw getting checked in at the United counter on Thursday...
