really? REALLY?

There are literate adults out there who don't know that the word for "wine opener" is "corkscrew"?

I had not thought that "adequate vocabulary" was something I would need to put on my dating profile, but perhaps I should consider it.

You might want to, not that that helps. I have a profile on a dating site, and one of the first things I put under "requirements" was "Needs to be literate". You have no idea how many messages I got which were barely legible.

Mmmm. I can guess, actually, given the number of profiles I read that made my jaw drop. In all fairness, "wine opener" is by no means the worst--I think it just struck me because the rest of the poster's profile seemed fairly coherent and edjumacated-like. I'm still marvelling at the number of people who respond "the Earth" when asked "Which is bigger, the Earth or the Sun?"

"Wine opener" is at least logical and analogous to "bottle opener". Earth and Sun are like people's problems: the closer they are, the bigger they look. ;-)

Oh, I'm not trying to persuade you of anything any more! :-) My new policy is to make suggestions and then deferentially withdraw, like a Mandarin laying a memorandum on an embroidered cushion before the Emperor's throne. ;-)

Besides, I have to admit that OKC (and online dating in general) has a very mixed record in my circle of friends. I met Nora, Amy, Kim, Victoria, and Emily through dating sites; none of those turned out very well. OTOH, I met Brooke and Rhoda through dating sites, and they've turned out to be good friends if not successful partners. I met Neta and Laura "in the real world", and those were pretty much disasters, and while meeting Megan through a mutual friend wasn't a disaster, it didn't end so well either; so IRL doesn't beat HTTP.

And we can't leave out the greatest success story of all: [livejournal.com profile] redactrice met [livejournal.com profile] shy_kat online, and if that hadn't happened, ALL our lives would be a lot poorer!

(though I might win more boardgames... ;-)

For some reason, what I see in my mind's eye is a mandarin orange on an embroidered cushion... also a nice image. :)

I dunno, I've seen some that are convoluted enough that calling them a mere corkscrew would be insufficient. :)

Heck there are the CO2 ones with no corkscrew whatsoever.
