I finished watching an episode of Lewis, turned back to live television and found... a new performance of HMS Pinafore! Yay!

So funny--it's been years since I listened to it, but all the words and melodies are all still lurking right at the edge of my brain.

O joy and rapture unforeseen....

Oh, what a shame! I saw the last two songs in the first act, and it seemed terrific. Then the second act came on, and they have added all sorts of tiresome slapstick and creakily coy double-entrendre dialogue that wasn't in the original. And they've re-orchestrated all the music in a very disagreeable way.

Damn it! Leave G&S alone--they were comic and musical geniuses, nothing some hackneyed modern twit is going to come up with will be better.

I'm also more of a purist. I watched the overture and had trouble finding Sullivan's wonderful music in it. Less than 5 minutes into the first act I had to change channels. Turned back to it every once in a while only to turn away quickly. Tuned it in as background for the last 10 minutes but found the bit with Queen Victoria and the Iolanthe music unnecessary and inane.
