(no subject)

One of the semi-spam mails I get fromt eh Democratic Party recently assured me that "With some people already casting their ballots, the election of 2004 is now underway, and nothing less than the future of our country is at stake."

I hate to be PedanticMan (OK, I don't, I love it), but isn't the future of the country *always* at stake in a federal election?

Goodness, no! :-) A tweed jacket, carefully pressed dark wool trousers, a button-down shirt, and a bow-tie. Probably cordovan loafers. His secret identity ("civilian") clothing would be exactly the same, but with tassels on the loafers...

This is taking it beyond pedantry and into the domain of nitpicking, though. Yes, technically the country's future is always at stake.

Not to this degree, however. This one's different. This one's not "well, what are we going to do about X and Y problems?" This one is "will our democracy actually survive?"

As much as I hate Bush and Cheney, I really can't agree. Democracy isn't going to end just becuase these guys get reelected. Our country is going to go in a bad direction that it will take us decades to get out of, but if they get reelected it's heading there already. The election is a result, not an event; it's the result of the combined will of those of the American people who choose to take part. And if they reelect George Bush, it's going to be because the country is (even marginally) content with the way he wants to take us.

I wish I had your confidence. Unfortunately, with the moves to restrict and suppress civil liberties on all fronts by this administration, I don't.

When people can be thrown out of a Presidential event for wearing shirts that say "protect our civil liberties", or someone can be arrested for heckling a speech...

Which is why this election is so darned interesting to me. I cannot fathom why someone would think the way things are going now are right for this country. I like knowing why people are voting the way they are. I also am interested in Republicans who are not voting for Bush. I know a few at work, and their reasons are similar to mine and I am about as liberal as they get.

I wonder if that last is true. It does seem to be the case that fence sitters who express their concern about Bushie domestic social policy (esp. civil liberties issues) seem genuinely convinced there's some magic about the current Pres. "keeping us safer." THAT astonishes me.

Actually, I was thinking of my old project manager when I started with SAIC, John J. Patrick. I would have to admit that for dry wit, biting sarcasm, and the ability to squeeze the utmost out of any opportunity for hair-splitting, I will always be in his shadow. And he's stick-like, dessicated, addicted to sweater vests or cardigans and bow ties, and wears one of those Siegfried-Farnon Irish tweed hats (alternately with the billed-cap style thing). He's also convinced that the world went to pot when el Caudillo gave up the ghost...

Wrong! Many many things less than the future of your country are at stake. Like the likely price of cheese or the the frequency of grass-trimming on highway verges.
In addition, the future of both our countries is at stake.
