In a video originally posted on the Web by a pro-Kerry organization in Austin, Texas, Ben Barnes, a former lieutenant governor of Texas, apologized for his role in getting a young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard while young men who were not from prominent or wealthy families "died in Vietnam."

The common definition seems to be:

ganch -
1. \Ganch\, v. t. [Cf. F. ganche, n., also Sp. & Pg. gancho
hook, It. gancio.]
To drop from a high place upon sharp stakes or hooks, as the
Turks dropped malefactors, by way of punishment.

Ganching, which is to let fall from on high upon hooks,
and there to hang until they die. --Sandys.

The version that I remember first coming across in literature was more specific in its refernce to hooks, but...

EEWWW, gross! Neal Stephenson mentioned this punishment in "Confusion." I guess it's a bit of a gamble how quickly the victim dies.

I suspect the Chinese would keep such things behind closed doors; none of that crass, obscenely public, throwing people from a great height outdoors stuff.
