weekend recap

Hmmm. Life seems like a huge ongoing whirl all the time right now, so I'm very pleased with myself if I can remember where I am or what I'm supposed to be doing, let alone what just happend five minutes ago. But let's see if I can recall most of the salient points of the weekend.

Saturday: Pottered about a good deal during the morning. Continued the long and involved process of getting the *small* things stowed, which is long and invovled because now that the furniture is in place, the books are unpacked (though wildly scattered about the shelves--some rainy weekend will involve cataloging and resorting them), and the Humongous Collection of Games unpacked, mostly what needs to be done now is the several boxes and crates of papers gone through and most of them thrown away as OBE or useless to being with, and the rest carefully filed.

I was able to put that off for a little longer, though, by installing the copy of FIFA 2007 that I got right after we moved, and (once that was doen and the PC turned off and totally unplugged), I took the case apart and got otu the can of compressed air that I got at the same time. HUGE amounts of CAKED dust in the front panel of the case; less, but still considerable amounts in the interior. I let the thing sit for a while (since the propellant had been cold, I figured it might not be good to heat up the components I'd sprayed with the compressed air right away) and started rerouting all the cables. When we arrived, I just put the PC down on the desk and didn't stow it in it's little cube at knee level, partly because some of the cables only just reach when it's down there, and partly because I knew I wanted to clean out the case. Having doen the latter, I thought I'd see how which cable exactly were too short and whether I might be able to get extenders for them. It turns out only the mouse cable is really too short, and I thought I might just get a wireless mouse, since this one has been damaged anyway (someone seems to have stripped off a small portion of the plastic cable covering--a cat, I can only assume, but it was done very neatly...)

Got the case back together, turned ont he PC, and had to check that it was running because I could barely hear it. Obviously I need to clean it more often... Tried out FIFA 2007, which works just fine :-) NJS came by while I was playing and rolled her eyes (she has a low opinion of video games, but the lure of one that involves *SOCCER* might be too much for her to resist!)

C called to say they were having to cancel their party, as Mel's family had had an emergency and they needed to go help out. I promised to call [livejournal.com profile] gr_c17 and warn him and to come over to Highland Lane the next day and make sure the house was ready for the open house in the afternoon. NJS and I invited Bryan to come over and game with us (since he had all that crab dip and no one to share it with...), and the three of us had quite an entertaining time playing Amun Re, eating the crab dip, and noshing on beer and burgers. NJS also made some very tasty flan, but managed to burn her finger (though not nearly as badly as during the Mango Sticky Rice Incident). We all watched "The Meaning of Life' (of which I foudn I had forgotten salient bits), and Bryan spent the night.

The next day the three of us had breakfast, then Bryan trundled off, and I went over to Virginia. I chatted for a while with the realtor, moved one table, and cleaned out the catbox. At Chris's suggestions, I pirated all the fresh produce they had just gotten at the farmer's market Saturday morning :-(. I headed back to Maryland and got home in time to ride with Neta over to the Team X semifinal match.

They were facing a team they'd played the week before, not a welcome sight, as these guys had a couple of terrifically whinge-y players and played a consistently chippy game. Team X got the last laugh, however, winning the match 6-0! Of all her teams, I like this one the best; they're very fun people to hang out with, and they play very well together for the most part.

We hurried home to catch the US national team's game against Mexico in the Gold Cup final. That was also very satisfying, as the US, though not playing as well as it might have, beat Mexico 2-1 in fornt of a heavily pro-Mexico crowd in Chicago's Soldier Field. Then we watched the recording of the previous night's DC United match against Real Salt Lake, which was much less satisfying, DC losing 2-1 in a flat, uninspired performance. We had a walk down the Long Branch Trail, then watched some 'Coupling' and went to bed.

This week I need to get my car inspected so I can get Maryland title and tags, and I need to go through my recent mail and make sure I've registered a change of address with all the people who need it (like my IRA account holders, my auto insurance company, etc.) Speaking of insurance, I need to follow up on the renters' insurance quotes I got. And I need to get the PBEM game going!
