31 questions from [livejournal.com profile] zoefruitcake

1. Name someone with the same birthday as you: Same day *and* year? Courtney Pine, a British jazz saxophonist, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_18). Same day, different year? Some interesting people (e.g., George Plimpton, Queen Latifah, Fidel Ramos, Grover Cleveland, John C. Calhoun, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff, and, much to my delight, Hercule Francois, duc d'Anjou et Alencon, who Elizabeth I always referred to as "my little frog"--I always felt sorry for him and somewhat admired him, despite his mishandling of the Netherlands, so I'm glad to find a connection). And American Express.

2. Where was your first kiss? On the lips? ;-) IIRC, it was at an SCA event i Hampton, VA, when I was 14. Kissing was the most amazing thing in the world, once I discovered it. It didn't happen often, but it was *so* cool! Plus sa change, plus sa meme chose; nothing I would like more than some kisses like those right now. ("What, nothing?" "No, nothing!" "Really, nothing?" "Well, almost nothing...")

3. Have you ever seriously vandalised someone else's property? Not that I recall. Stolen, occasionally, but not vandalized...

4. Have you ever hit someone of the opposite sex? I don't recall why, but when I was 3 or 4 I hit my grandmother (I think she was taking me somewhere I didn't want to go, and I flailed at her and slapped her with my open hand). Being a woman of the Old School, she punched me in the stomach, hard. Thus the lesson: boys should not hit girls--they hit back harder.

5. Have you ever sung in front of a large number of people? Define "large": I've sung around campfires, in tavern tents, and at Ship's Company shantey nights.

6. What's the first thing you notice about the preferred sex? Height. Body type. Face (generally). Hair style. Eyes. Mouth. How she dresses. Not necessarily my order of preference/priority, just what what I happen to notice.

7. What really turns you on? Curvy women. Curly hair (but also straight hair, long hair, short hair :-) Attractive clothing (OK, maybe shallow I'm, but I'm fascinated by fabric--texture, colour, patterning, cut--and the way well-made and well-chosen clothes complement an attractive woman; and I don't mean especially fancy--a white shirt and a pair of jeans can be stunning in the right context). Perfume. Candlelit darkness. Being desired.

8. What do you order at Starbucks? Just plain coffee, usually. Sometimes cafe latte.

9. What is your biggest mistake? Wow, just one? :-/ Losing my temper and shouting at Liz that one time after the soccer game. I don't geenrally go in for single, crushin mistkes, though, more like patterns of stupid behavior: not workign *quite* hard enough, having just *one* more drink than I ought to, letting my temper get the better of me and saying what I really think to a boss or in an email, instead of either lying tactfully or not saying anything at all.

10. Have you ever hurt yourself on purpose? Cut my hand once on purpose. Long ago, stupid story.

11. Say something totally random about yourself. One of the fillings I got the other day is still hurting.

12. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity? Not that I recall. Caribbean cabdrivers tend to think I'm British, but not any British person in particular.

13. Do you still watch kiddy movies or tv shows? Not all that often, but I read a lot of notionally kids' books.

14. Did you have braces? Yes, and what a waste of time, money, and pain that was.

15. Are you comfortable with your height? More or less, yes. Not comfortable with my weight, but that's a different issue.

16. What is the most romantic thing someone of the opposite sex has done for you? Well, someone brought me flowers once, instead of the other way around; that was a big surprise, and very sweet. And someone cleared out a drawer in her bureau so that I could keep some clothes at her place--that had me smiling for a week! But I think I'd have to say that the most romantic thing was when a certain person surprised me one Christmas with a really beautiful Yamaha guitar. :-) I know how much trouble she went to to choose it, buy it, and get it home and hide it until she could give it to me.

17. When do you know it's love? It's visceral--a feeling of joy, of elation, of wanting to do anything and everything to (a) be near her and (b) make her happy.

18. Do you speak any other languages? Not really. Only little fragments, barely enough to make more than a sentence or two, of French, German, Japanese, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Spanish (mostly only soccer or curse words...) Boy, if I could actually *speak* all the languages I know little bits of--that would be so cool!

19. Have you ever been to a tanning salon? No. I don't generally tan; I just burn instead. If I'm working outside _all summer_ I'll turn brown(ish), but otherwise I just get red and peel.

20. What magazines do you read? The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, Current History (occasionally), Export Practitioner (OK, that mostly just sits on my desk and then I pass it on to someone else), Against the Odds, Strangers in Paradise (religiously), White Dwarf (sometimes). Used to read The Economist, but I gave it up.

21. Have you ever ridden in a limo? Not that I remember.

22. Has anyone you were really close to passed away? No, but I expect that will change in the next 5-10 years. :-( Three of my grandparents died before I was born, and I was never that close to my one grandmother (nothing to do with the previosu incident--she just wasn't a person who encouraged or dsiplayed affection.)

23. Do you watch MTV? Nope. I used to back in college, when they actually showed music videos.

24. What's something that really annoys you? People who use leaf blowers or who use water to clean up parking lots or driveways. Use a rake or a broom, dammit!

25. What's something you really like? Kisses. :-) Good music (Ellis Paul, Dar Williams, Dougie McLean). A good book. A cool spring/fall morning or evening when I don't have to go anywhere and can just sit and enjoy the quiet. Thunderstorms. A well-cooked steak (sorry, veggie friends).

26. Do you like Michael Jackson? Not really.

27. Can you dance? Back in the day I learned various sorts of Renaissance dancing, which I've never used much. Don't know any contra/ballroom/swing/English or Scottish country dances, but I think I might enjoy learning, with the right partner.

28. What's the latest you have ever stayed up? Well, our college trivia contest used to run from midnight until 8 in the morning at the end of each semester, and usually everyone went for breakfast after that. Ten years ago I did an eight-hour data collection shift in an Army CP, then got snagged to do half of another guy's shift (he'd gotten sick) so I ended up working from 8 pm to 8 am (and then another couple of hours of data reduction after that). That was the first time I recall falling asleep standing up.

30. Have you ever been rushed by an ambulance into the emergency room? Yes, after I bounced my parents' Volvo off a bridge abutment and a tree when I was 18. :-( The Volvo got totalled; I got a cut on my nose.

31. Do you actually read these when other people fill them out? Not often, but occasionally.
