criticism from those "on the sharp end"

As usual, I've been busy and not able to keep up with LJ. So this may already have been posted to death. But IMO it's worth reading, mayeb even twice.

Kevin Tillman on the war in Iraq.

A lot of people are saying these things, but they have extra resonance to me when they come from someone who has been to war, who volunteered to fight for his country and has served in combat abroad. It doesn't make you automatically smarter or wiser, but it gives your words more impact to me than, for instance, those of someone who engineered his way out of active service during wartime, like the president, or someone who avoided military service altogether, like the vice president.

If America doesn't hold these men accountable, if it doesn't ask hard, uncompromising questions of all the men and women who have formulated and carried out our policies, sending men and women into harm's way for no good reason, over the last three years, then we will have failed in our duty as citizens.
